Wendy Hallstrom is a multimedia artist living in Western New Jersey. An engineer by training and for a first career, she has transitioned to full time artist.
Wendy has had a lifelong love affair with visual arts of all kinds and has explored a variety of media before concentrating on watercolor painting. She has studied a variety of media under teaching artists on the East coast, eventually concentrating on watercolor. In the early 2000’s, Wendy began focusing on watercolor, and has progressed to teaching watercolor in addition to her own painting.
Wendy finds the unpredictability of watercolor to be fascinating and a challenge. When the paint does something surprising, the creative challenge is to use this unexpected result to enhance her vision for the piece. For the past 5 years, she has been focusing on the exploration of color, layering and negative space. The many ways to mix, layer, and create tension with color are exciting. Combining this with negative space results in strong values and interesting depths of color in her paintings.
In addition to watercolor, Wendy paints in acrylic using the mediums to express contemporary political statements. She writes icons with egg tempera in the traditional manner.
Wendy has taught painting to adults and children at several art centers in Central New Jersey. She also leads workshops in the folk art of Pysanky in both Central New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.
